Upcycled Gardening Container

Upcycled Gardening Container

Gardening has never been my forte. In fact, I call myself quite the black thumb because any plant I tried to grow died in a span of days to weeks. I always wanted to learn to grow things that I could eat so I started a garden. I liked the flexibility having my plant in containers. I could move my plants in or out of the sun according to their needs and even inside if the weather was not great for my new friends. Also, if I ever wanted to move I could easily take all of my plants with me. Container garden it is!

Now, as you probably know, one of the main goals of container gardening is to pay as little as possible for your containers, or even better get it for free. Home depot and maybe some local nurseries do have containers for free when people who have purchased plants return the pot it was sold in. I definitely took advantage of that resource but I also wanted to use this opportunity to be crafty and do an upcycle project.

When my husband and I purchased our first home, a small duplex with a deck, we received a Weber grill as a house warming gift. Since then this grill has basically become a member of our family. We cooked some epic meals on that thing so when the time came to retire it I thought that we could immortalize our beloved grill into something useful.

First I cleaned the grill as best as I could just using soap, water, a steel brush and cloth. Then I primed it out.

I used Krylon spray paint which is usually good to go without priming but I wanted to make sure that my pumpkin orange color popped.

I used Krylon Metallic Silver for the legs. To make sure I had proper drainage for the plants, I left the bottom grate in the grill and laid gardening mesh over it so the soil would stay on that level. All in all it was an enjoyable project with a cool result. As always, I learned a lot along the way and always will!
